My mum, sister and I did a mini road trip up to Red Hill to make the most of a bright and sunny day. And what a wonderful way to spend an afternoon – food, wine and sun. Is there anything better? The Montalto Piazza is a fantastic venue for a long, lazy Sunday session.
The menu has a range of small snacks, and some hearty meat, fish and veg options. Oh, and I can’t forget the drool-worthy pizza. We decided to take the burden of choice away and opted for the $45 p/person ‘Feed Me’ menu. I just sat back and enjoyed the sprawling landscape, whilst sipping some of the wineries own Cuvee.
Before I get on to the food, I will say that the service here was odd. Friendly, but kind of meek. There were a fair few wait staff around, but they just kind of stood around. I had to get up and go order a second round of drinks, and some dessert from a waiter that was standing a couple of metres away. It was strange..warm service, so long as you could flag it down.
Our feast started with a serve of spelt & fennel ciabatta served with olive oil, and some pickled zucchini with yoghurt. Next came a beautiful dish of green quail; this was perfectly green quail topped with some light basil pesto. This dish was more-ish and delicious.
The final starter was perhaps one of the prettiest dishes I’ve seen in a while. I mean perfectly cooked calamari topped with some toasted pine nuts. Totally yummy!
The main event started with a Napoli pizza to share. My, my this was a perfect pizza. The base was thin, the edges crispy, and the Napoli sauce was jam packed full of flavour and a smack in the mouth.
A whole market fish was the main event. The fish was served with carrots topped with an olive and walnut crumb, and a green side salad. The fish was well cooked, the carrots were delicious but the green salad was a total snooze fest. My only qualm with this dish was the fact that the fish was served with carrots, and one of the sides provided was a plate full of carrots. I walked away with a slight orange tinge at the end of this meal.
That was the end of our Feed Me inclusions – no dessert (sad face). Of course, that didn’t stop this chubby! I ordered a rhubarb tart to share with my sister. Delicious.
I loved dining at the piazza in Montalto. Apart from the intermittent service, this was exactly how I picture heaven to be like. Great food, great wine, and warm, glowing sun. The food and drink was completely worth the calories, and I totally recommend doing a day trip and spending some time here. Just try and get in early on a weekend, as they don’t take reservations and the place does get quite busy.
