My visit to Spare Me Kitchen was funded by a competition that I entered via Facebook – yes, people actually win social media competitions. #winning #won #freemealplease
I won a dinner for two at Spare Me Kitchen that’s housed within Glamorama Bar where my $110 voucher got us a lot of food. As we entered, early on a Friday evening, I was pretty surprised to find how empty this large space was – there was one other table of four diners and then us.
The service was fantastic; our server was knowledgeable, friendly and funny, without being overly hoverly (yes, new word – hoverly). My partner and I ordered a truck load of food, possible way too much for two people.
The menu is very American – burgers, fries and a lot of fried stuff. I ordered the three nine three burger, buttermilk fried chicken pops, a rocket and pear salad, charred brocollini and some sweet potato fries.
The 393 comes with a 150g all-Australian beef patty, cheese, red onions, ketchup and mayo; it’s your stereotypical burger. It was all just okay. There was just nothing wow about it, and it’s no better than something I could whip up at home.
My charred brocollini came with zucchini, kale, avocado, and hummus, and the salad was a simple one of rocket, pear and parmesan. Both these dishes were nice, though not wow.
My favourites from the meal were the buttermilk chicken pops, and the thick sweet potato fries. These chicken pops came with a lemon tartare for dipping, and were deliciously crispy fried.
The sweet potato fries were thick cut, well seasoned, and tasty. I love me some SP fries!
All in all, I wouldn’t go out of my way to dine at Spare Me Kitchen and I probably won’t visit again. The menu isn’t really my thing, the food isn’t worth the calories, and the ambience was a bit flat.
