The Mill is a large, factory like restaurant and bar that serves up modern Australian cuisine, cocktails and tapas. I was pleasantly surprised by the venue’s high ceilings, large spacious dining hall and laid-back atmosphere.
So why was I in Echuca? Well, I did a weekend road trip to Echuca recently to see a friend that moved regional for her new man and new job, and to celebrate her birthday. So of course this weekend getaway consisted of a lot of eating and drinking. The Mill was the birthday girl’s restaurant pick for some birthday drinks and a chill dinner.
With about 12+ people in our group, I was expecting a few stuff-ups in service. I was wrong though; the service was great, with very little mix up or chaos. The wait staff were friendly, knowledgeable and clearly well-versed on dealing with large groups.
A friend and I decided that we couldn’t just pick one dish each, and ordered a few different items off the menu to share. I love doing this, and it’s almost a prerequisite to becoming friends that we share food – isn’t that part of the meaning of life?
Anyway, I was happily sipping my delicious espresso martini cocktail as I waited on our feast to arrive. My meal started with some spanner crab banh mi, and Thai meatballs.
Both the crab rolls and the meatballs were tasty, albeit nothing that made me weak at the knees.
What did make me weak at the knees was the house-made gnocchi, served with a pear chutney. Oh em gee…the gnocchi was pillowy, delicious and completely moreish. This is a must try dish!
The main event for the night was the beef wellington, served with some wilted greens and jus. The mushroom duxelles and pate around the perfectly cooked meat was delicious. The eye fillet was perfectly cooked, and the pastry was buttery and crispy. What was not to love about this dish?
Yes, it’s not the prettiest dish that came out, but it was tasty AF.
The Mill is a great space to catch up with friends, and enjoy some cocktails and good food. I thought everything I had was worth the calories and I would definitely go back when I’m around the area next.
